Tapas: “Small plates of highly flavoursome food traditionally enjoyed with wine.”
It’s written on the black board above the bar in case we ever forget what we do at Albariño.
Freshly sliced cured hams served with a few pickles, strong cheeses with dried fruits. A selection of skilfully prepared seasonal tapas served with a glass of crisp, dry white wine. Great food, great wine shared amongst friends! For me this is the perfect meal… one that is hard to beat!
The seeds for Albariño were first sown after a trip to Cal-Pep in Barcelona, where we found an inspired menu with great wines served on a long narrow bar with only 20 seats. We had six plates of the freshest tapas cooked to order in full view, served as and when they were ready. On the way out we were not surprised to find a long queue of people waiting to be fed.
Why the name Alabrino? I am often asked… It is my wife’s favourite wine and I’m pleased to say that after much searching we managed to source and bring to Broadstairs the very same wine we enjoyed when we first discovered it in a tapas bar in San Sebastian.
When the sun is shining over Viking bay, I look out of the window and find myself back in Spain. I hope people will come to Albariño to experience this little slice of Spain for themselves.
